From Insecurity 

to Citizenship

For many immigrants, this past year has been one of uncertainty and fear.

In 2017, GLCAC's Immigration Services Program has helped, at no cost, more than 600 people who could not afford legal services to navigate the immigration system.

Four year ago, Franklin immigrated to Lawrence from the Dominican Republic, and today he is a U.S. Citizen.

Our immigration specialist guided him through the application process and petitioned for his four children, ages 8-16, to join their father.  And we were able to do so much more:

• The reunited family needed a bigger apartment, but first- and last-month's rent is an obstacle for many low income people.  Our rental assistance program helped there.
• A bigger apartment costs more to heat. The family qualified for fuel assistance, another service we provide.
• Franklin also enrolled in English and job-training classes we offer to improve his employment prospects.

Now working as a butcher. Franklin and his children have achieved a better life and their American Dream is becoming a reality.

Our mission is to help people with low incomes achieve self-sufficiency and a better life - the American Dream.  That includes both immigrants and citizens alike.

People who seek help with one problem are often tackling other issues.  We try to address the multiple needs impacting their lives. Our range of services include:

• Classes to learn English and job skills
• Home heating assistance
• Food and nutrition
• Help enrolling in health insurance
• Consumer protection
• Lead-poisoning prevention
• Rental assistance
• Parenting classes

Income-tax preparation, and a lot more.
