Daniela’s Story: Affordable Preschool Key to Success

Friday, Aug 17, 2018

Daniela Chavez-Hernandez was 16 when she emigrated from her home country of Mexico with her mother and three sisters, not knowing a word of English. Her father had died in an accident on her first birthday.

Daniela spent seven years earning an associate’s degree, graduating with honors at Northern Essex Community College in 2017.

Through perseverance, hard work and assistance from organizations like the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc., Daniela is now attending Tufts University to continue her education in social work, while working and raising her 3-year-old daughter.

GLCAC’s Child Care Center, which offers subsidized rates for families that make too much for vouchers but too little to afford full private pay, was the perfect option for Daniela’s family.

With her young daughter well cared for during the day, Daniela was able to work and attend school at the same time, setting her on a path for a bright future and economic prosperity.

GLCAC preschools taught more than 1,000 children in 2017, freeing parents for work or study.

Please consider how you can help GLCAC continue its mission of providing programs that help lift families out of poverty and place them on the road to success.
