GLCAC Celebrates WIC Day May 2

Friday, Apr 26, 2019

The Lawrence WIC program at the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc. is taking part in the statewide WIC Day on May 2 with an open house, games and activities.

Events include a make-your-own yogurt parfait bar, raffles, face painting, crafts and games. The celebration, which is open to WIC clients and members of the community, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lawrence WIC office, 305 Essex St. in Lawrence.

“We encourage the entire community to come by and learn firsthand about the WIC program and how the services benefit families in the Merrimack Valley,’’ said Evelyn Friedman, GLCAC’s executive director. “WIC isn’t just about providing food to mothers and their children – it’s about promoting a nutritious, healthy lifestyle.’’

This event is part of the Massachusetts WIC program’s first ever WIC Day to celebrate its services and most of all, WIC families. The events will offer an opportunity to learn more about the services WIC has to offer.

Massachusetts WIC is hosting over 31 events across the state to welcome WIC families and invite them to bring friends and families who may also be eligible for services.

WIC is the premier nutrition program of the Department of Public Health and provides nutrition and health education, free nutritious food and access to health care to low-to moderate income pregnant women, infants and children under five. Massachusetts WIC currently serves nearly half of all Massachusetts infants and over 106,000 individuals.

GLCAC is a multi-faceted social services agency that assisted 32,648 individuals in 2018 through a range of programs including early childhood education, fuel assistance, WIC nutrition assistance, immigration services, lead poisoning prevention, child abuse prevention, English-language lessons, and consumer protection.
